General Precautions Before Traveling
  1. Confirm Identity via Live Video Call
Conduct a real-time video call before agreeing to travel with another user. Ask them to show identification and discuss your mutual expectations and plans. This step helps confirm their identity and reduces the risk of misrepresentation.
  2. Verify Social Media or Public Presence
Review the user’s online presence across platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, or LinkedIn. Look for consistent names, photos, and timelines that indicate authenticity.
  3. Do Not Send Money to Other Users
Roamate does not facilitate or mediate payments between users. Never send funds directly to another user via apps like Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, or wire transfer. All shared expenses should be paid directly to the supplier (e.g., hotel, airline) using split payment methods whenever available.
  4. Use Secure, Traceable Payment Methods
Pay only verified vendors and retain all receipts. Consider using services that offer card masking or purchase protection to reduce the risk of fraud. Always screenshot and save confirmation details.
  5. Ensure Both Travelers Are on the Reservation
When booking shared accommodations, both parties should be listed on the reservation record. This ensures mutual access and avoids disputes or safety issues during check-in.
  6. Exchange Emergency Contacts
Each traveler should provide a trusted emergency contact in writing. Include their name, relationship, and phone number.
  7. Share Your Full Itinerary With Someone You Trust
Send your full travel plan, including lodging and transportation details, to a friend or family member. Enable location-sharing apps (such as Life360, Find My, or TripIt) and agree on daily check-ins during the trip.
  8. Set Personal Boundaries in Advance
Discuss sleep preferences, space sharing, budgeting, alcohol consumption, and quiet hours before committing to travel. Confirm these expectations in writing via chat, text, or email to prevent misunderstandings.
  9. Have a Contingency Plan
Research alternative lodging or transit options in advance. Maintain access to an emergency fund or backup credit card in case you need to modify your plans or exit the situation.

On-Trip Safety Recommendations
  1. Control Your Own Transportation
Always book your own arrival and departure transportation. Avoid relying on another traveler to pick you up or drop you off, especially in unfamiliar destinations.
  2. Limit and Secure Valuables
Travel with only essential valuables. Use a lockable suitcase or secure hotel safe for passports, medications, cash, and electronics.
  3. Practice Situational Awareness
Avoid overconsumption of alcohol and be alert to your surroundings. Never leave your drink unattended or accept substances from someone you don’t know well.
  4. Trust Your Instincts
If a situation feels unsafe or uncomfortable, remove yourself immediately. Your safety takes precedence over social expectations or politeness.

If a Safety Concern Arises
  1. Use Roamate’s In-App Reporting Tools
Report concerning behavior through Roamate’s in-app Report or Block feature. This helps protect the community and enables internal review of user behavior.
  2. Contact Local Authorities for Emergencies
In the event of physical danger, harassment, or suspected criminal activity, contact local law enforcement or emergency services immediately. Roamate cannot provide real-time intervention.
If you are in immediate danger, prioritize emergency services first.
